Every year thousands of babies are born in the United States with cleft lips and in some instances also cleft palates. This birth defect occurs when a baby’s lip or mouth does not form properly during pregnancy. While the exact cause of cleft lips and palates is unknown, genetic factors may play a small role, which is why doctors encourage those who are thinking about becoming pregnant to lead healthy lifestyles. Most children do well with corrective surgery and go on to lead a normal life.
