5 ways to help treat psoriasis at home

With more than 8 million Americans suffering from psoriasis, we could all use some tips on how to treat this itchy disease.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, nearly 60% of people with psoriasis said the disease is a large problem in their lives, which is why it’s good to know some home remedies for the next time your skin is scratchy and red. 

1. Use lots of lotion

This might seem like a no-brainer, but applying lotions and moisturizes will lock moisture into your skin and ideally make the itching sensation decrease. Petroleum jelly would work well here, too. 

2. Soak up the sun

OK, we’re not talking about a full day of tanning, but a couple minutes in the sun can do wonders for psoriasis. The sun’s ultraviolet B rays will help your psoriasis, but make sure you cover up in sun screen where there isn’t psoriasis on your body. No one likes a sunburn. 

3. Take a salt bath

Getting water back into your skin is so helpful when you have psoriasis, so taking a bath is a great way to do that. Adding Epsom salt to a warm bath will only make it better. You should soak for abut 15 minutes and moisturize after to help trap the water into your skin. 

4. Try turmeric supplements

Studies show that turmeric can help reduce psoriasis flare-ups, so it’s worth a shot to see if it works for you. Turmeric is a common ingredient in curry sauce, so add more turmeric to your diet or take it in a supplement. 

5. Treat your skin to some apple cider vinegar 

This is a great remedy if you have psoriasis flare-ups on your scalp. Add some apple cider vinegar to problem areas a few times a week to alleviate pain. Just make sure to wash it out once it dries.
