The Number One Cause of Blindness and Vision Loss

Glaucoma is the number one cause of blindness and vision loss and affects over 3 million people in the United States. It is also known as “the sneak thief of sight” because there are no symptoms or pain in the early stages of the disease so many people are unware they have it.

Glaucoma is manageable but not curable. A person’s vision cannot be recovered once it is lost to the disease; therefore, it is important to attend regular eye examinations to detect the disease early. African Americans over 40 years old, anyone over 60 years old, especially Latinos/Hispanics, and people with a family history of glaucoma, are at a higher risk of getting this disease.

Help raise awareness of glaucoma and make a new year’s resolution for healthy vision. Encourage others, especially those as higher risk, to do the same.
