April is Organ Donation Month

There is currently a shortage of available donated organs. With advances in science, in particular transplant surgery, the number of patients needing a transplant procedure has increased, while available donated organs has not.

There are plenty of types of organ donation. The donation of a heart, lung, liver, or kidney can save and improve the lives of those in need of a replacement. Transplanted bone can rebuild a limb, avoiding the need for amputation. A donated heart valve or veins can be used in life-saving surgeries like cardiac reconstruction or heart bypass operations. Corneas can be donated to restore sight, and skin can even be donated to help in the healing process of burn victims.
